Notes for JOHN ALEXANDER OR ANDREW SMITH:
The 1810, 1820, and 1830 census for TN (Montgomery and Rutherford counties) show many Smith's. At this point, with all of the research, I am led to believe that they were ALL related. There is no doubt at this point because of the prolificness of them.
None of the census records show names of children or state of birth, all they show are age groups and how many are in that age group. More lengthy examination will reveal, I hope, who was whose children and parents, if those records were kept of birth.
On closer examination of the census records for the year 1810, with the age groups being so sketchy, I have concluded that there were in fact, 4 brothers that were the parents of all of the other children. In picking one brother, with the most of age children in that group, I have concluded that Elijah is the father of John A. Smith. In my opinion, it will be a close call on which of the brothers is actually his father, but they all lead to the same father in any event, which will lead to his grand father, still in the family line in any event.
John A. would have been around 16 years old at the time of the 1810 census and not out of his parents household yet.
The 1820 census shows him having 2 children in the age group of 5 years of age and under.
